An EXTREMELY RARE and REMARKABLY COMPLETE original eighteenth century tome of Abrégé de l'Histoire Générale des Voyages by Jean-François de La Harpe from 1780. The l'Histoire Générale des Voyages is an adaptation between early chronicles fashioned from the Age of Exploration and travelogues that saw the rise of modern philosophy during the Age of Enlightenment.

La Harpe continued the work of the more prominent Benedictine author Antoine François Prévost d'Exiles (1697-1763) whose style for l'Histoire Générale des Voyages was a “reduction” of expeditions of various European explorers throughout the world. Abbé Prévost and La Harpe's efforts were transformed into twenty volumes' worth of essential historical narratives, and thusly, reflected the knowledge of cultured individuals in the eighteenth century.

In this extremely scarce fifth volume of l'Histoire Générale des Voyages, the work is focused on the history of India, Sri Lanka, and Mongolia. The voyages of Fernão Mendes Pinto, Guillaume Bontekoé, and other European expeditions are also described in the work. The book includes five charming scenic engravings on Hindustan; one fold-out engraving on the Mongol court; and two fold-out maps: one of the interesting regions of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tibet and India; and another set on the face of South India and Sri Lanka.

The grand success of La Harpe was deemed significant in setting the stage for French expansionism which continues to expand its commercial network throughout the world.

EXTREMELY RARE. The maps and copper engravings are well-preserved and in excellent condition.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jean-François de La Harpe (1739-1803) was a French critic, playwright, and historian of French literature. La Harpe lost his parents at an early age and was imprisoned at nineteen for allegedly writing a satire against his college protectors. He wrote plays, but his notable works were Warwick (1763), his first tragedy, and Mélanie (1778), a drama that was never performed. He was the editor of the Mercure de France and was respected but often disliked for his unsympathetic views.

After being admitted to the Académie française, he began lecturing at the newly established Lycée in 1786. La Harpe was imprisoned in April 1794 as he was accused of his revolutionary beliefs. He soon became an ardent Roman Catholic and attacked his former friends when he returned to the Lycée. His Oeuvres were published in 1821.
