ABOUT THE ARTIST

Louis Gabriel Domeny de Rienzi (1789-1843) was a well-traveled nineteenth century French ethnologist, ethnographer, and artist. explorer. After he participated in the Napoleonic Wars, he embarked on a new journey to explore Egypt, India, the Dutch East Indies, and Oceania. Unfortunately, he lost everything when the ship he was on sank while returning to Europe from Canton in 1829.

In 1834, the publisher Firmin Didot hired Rienzi to write several volumes of work dedicated to Oceania for his collection L'Univers. The three-volume work titled Oceania or fifth part of the world, geographical and ethnographic review of Malaysia, Micronesia, Polynesia, and Melanesia was published in 1836-1837. Rienzi's reflections were accompanied by three hundred lithographs and is a compilation of Rienzi's own experiences and those of Cook and Bougainville, showcased the culture and customs of the natives as he saw them during his travels.
