1659 Indiae Orientalis Nova (early Australia) by Philipp Clüver || antique map of Southeast Asia & Australia

DESCRIPTION & CONDITION

An EXTREMELY RARE and astonishingly impressive original early seventeenth century hand-colored copper engraving of Southeast Asia, China, and the Philippines, with early Australia from Introductio in Universam Geographiam made by Philipp Clüver in 1659.

In 1606, Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon landed on the western side of Cape York Peninsula and charted about 300 kilometers of Australia's coastline. The discovery of Terra Australis (the Southern Lands) led to the birth of European exploration of the unspoiled Australian wilderness.

This map is an unusual example of European cartography in the East Indies, Pacific, and Oceania. In this scarce miniature map, Australia appears over a century before the passage and arrival of English explorer James Cook in 1770.

EXTREMELY RARE. This hand-colored copper engraving is well-preserved and in incredibly good condition. Mounted and framed.

ABOUT THE MAP MAKER

Philipp Clüver (1580-16220) was an eminent German geographer who played a crucial role in the Renaissance of geographical scholarship in Europe and is recognized as the pioneer of historical geography.

Born in Danzig (now Gdańsk), Poland, Clüver embarked on a remarkable journey across Europe, first serving as a soldier and later exploring various regions. Eventually, in 1615, he settled in the city of Leiden, Netherlands. The following year, he was bestowed the prestigious title of geographus academicus, which designated him as an esteemed academic geographer of the now-famous university and entailed an annual stipend.

Clüver approached the study of geography from a historical perspective, drawing inspiration from classical authors and their writings. Among his notable contributions, the most significant is his magnum opus, the Introductio in Universam Geographiam (1624). This monumental work comprises six volumes, with the first volume encompassing a comprehensive overview of the Earth. However, it is the remaining five volumes that secured his enduring reputation.

Within these volumes, Clüver presents succinct descriptions of various countries while emphasizing the human and historical aspects associated with them. This distinctive approach made his work immensely influential, and the Introductio retained its status as a definitive reference in the field of geography well into the mid-18th century.
